Frequently Asked Questions:

Please reach us at connect@thesweeteststate.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes! The Sweetest State Confections is proudly woman-owned and operated, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. We are a small, hands-on business run by just the two of us, and we make every confection ourselves.

As our business has grown, we've chosen to focus our time and energy on wholesale, partnering with retailers who share our appreciation for thoughtfully crafted, locally made confections. Today, our confections can be found in select retail locations, with a growing presence in RDU and CLT airports.

We may be small by design, but we're proud of the reach our confections have found beyond North Carolina, and even more proud to know that each one still passes through our hands.

We believe a confection can be more than something sweet. It can be a way to experience a place, discover a story, and connect with something familiar.

Each of our confections is inspired by a different state, with flavors rooted in its history, traditions, ingredients, and character. We don't simply choose a flavor and give it a state name; we begin with the story and let that story inspire the confection.

We are a small, handcrafted business by design. There are just two of us behind The Sweetest State, and we make every confection ourselves in Raleigh, North Carolina. From researching the stories behind each state to creating, packaging, and sharing the finished confections with our retail partners, we're personally involved in every step. It's this combination of story, craftsmanship, and a little bit of wonder that makes The Sweetest State uniquely ours.

The idea behind The Sweetest State began with a simple question: What if you could experience the story of a place through its flavors?

Every state has its own history, traditions, ingredients, and stories to tell. We wanted to bring those details together in a way that was both familiar and unexpected, one confection at a time.

So we set out to create a confection inspired by each of the 50 states, turning local flavors, traditions, and pieces of history into something you can discover, share, and enjoy. The result is a collection that invites you to travel across the country without ever leaving your "sweet" spot.

Every state has a story, and we just happen to tell ours one confection at a time.

Every state gives us a different place to begin. We look to its history, traditions, local ingredients, iconic foods, and the stories that have shaped its character for inspiration.

From there, we ask ourselves how those ideas can be translated into a confection. Sometimes the inspiration is an unmistakable local favorite; other times, it is a lesser-known piece of history or a combination of flavors that captures the spirit of the state unexpectedly. We then develop and refine each recipe until the finished confection feels worthy of its story. The goal isn't simply to create a flavor that represents a state, but to create something that makes you curious about the story behind it.

A mendiant (men-dee-ahnt, French pronunciation: [mɑ̃.djɑ̃]) is a traditional French confection with a rich history, consisting of a chocolate disk adorned with nuts and dried fruits. The term "mendiant," meaning "beggar," refers to the four mendicant monastic orders that took vows of poverty and begged for charity. Historically, each fruit and nut on the mendiant represents one of these orders and their robe colors: almonds for the Dominicans (white), raisins for the Franciscans (gray), hazelnuts for the Carmelites (brown), and dried figs for the Augustinians (purple). These ingredients not only symbolize the items the monks traditionally begged for but also reflect the colors of the robes worn by each group of friars during the Middle Ages, making each mendiant a tribute to their heritage.

Much like the traditional mendiants that reflect the history and monastic heritage of France, our mendiants are thoughtfully crafted to embody the distinct flavors and unique stories of each state, celebrating their regional tastes and traditions.

The Sweetest State Confections is a small, handcrafted wholesale confectionery, and we are proud to keep it that way. With just the two of us behind the business, we've chosen to focus our time and energy on creating confections for our retail partners rather than selling directly to customers online.

Our confections are available through select retail locations, with the majority of our collection currently found in RDU and CLT airports. So, while you won't find an online shop here, you'll find our confections in stores throughout the airports and local shops we call home.

We love knowing that our confections are being discovered as part of someone's travels, and we're grateful to the retail partners who help us share The Sweetest State with customers near and far.

Many of our confections contain common allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, and/or wheat (gluten). All items are crafted in a North Carolina Department of Agriculture-Certified Home Processor Kitchen, using shared equipment and utensils. Because of this, there is a risk of cross-contact, and we cannot guarantee that any product is entirely free from these ingredients.

We want you to feel confident in what you're enjoying, so we’re always happy to answer questions about ingredients. As we continue to develop new creations, we’ll add detailed ingredient information for each item.

We also hand-mix all of our colors using pigments imported from Australia, where food dye regulations are more restrictive. This allows us to work with select, approved ingredients and create our signature vibrant hues.

Review Ingredients/Allergen Information

Our confections are handcrafted in a kitchen that handles dairy, gluten, nuts, and other common allergens. While some of our offerings, like our dark confection base, do not contain dairy ingredients, most decor is made with our white confection base, which contains dairy.

We cannot guarantee that any product is allergen-free due to the potential for cross-contact. If you have any questions about ingredients or are looking for a special option, please don't hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to help guide you toward the best fit for your needs.

Our mendiants are a perfect blend of truffle and bar, crafted in small batches and topped with flavors that reflect regional tastes and seasonal flair. While some toppings and colors may contain preservatives, our custom chocolate compound blends are made without glucose syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, or added preservatives.

Because our confections are delicate by design, we recommend storing them in a cool, dry place between 55–65°F.

For the sweetest experience, we recommend enjoying your confections within 90 days. While they’ll remain safe beyond that, this window offers the best flavor at its peak.

Yes! Our creations are very sensitive to temperature, especially heat, and may soften or “bloom” if exposed to extremes. While it may affect the look, it’s perfectly safe to eat and doesn’t impact flavor.

If your sweets arrived home a little too warm, don’t worry! Just pop the box in the freezer for a few minutes to help everything firm back up. They may not look exactly as we intended, but the flavor journey is still delicious.

To keep your treats looking and tasting their best, we recommend storing them in a cool, dry place between 55–65°F.

Did you know? A chocolate bloom is a whitish-grey film or streaks that can discolor or dull the surface of the chocolate. It is very common and is simply the cocoa butter or fat within the chocolate rising to the surface.
